Folding, Walking or Golf Umbrella: Which Should You Choose?

27 August 2026 —

Folding, walking or golf umbrella – which is right for you? The answer mostly comes down to how you plan to use it. Do you need something compact enough to keep in a bag, a traditional full-length umbrella for everyday walks, or the extra coverage of a golf umbrella?

Each has its advantages, so we’ve compared the three to help you choose.

Folding umbrellas: made to travel

The obvious advantage of a folding umbrella is its size when closed.

A telescopic shaft allows the umbrella to collapse down and fit into a handbag, backpack or briefcase. Some of the smallest models are little more than 20cm long when folded.

That makes folding umbrellas particularly useful for:

  • commuting
  • travelling
  • keeping in your work bag
  • days when rain is possible rather than certain
  • anyone who doesn’t want to carry an umbrella by hand all day

They’re also available in considerably more than tiny pocket sizes. Some folding designs combine a telescopic frame with a surprisingly large canopy.

So, folding doesn’t necessarily mean small when open.

Walking umbrellas: simple, traditional and substantial

A walking umbrella doesn’t collapse into itself. Instead, the full-length shaft remains intact.

That makes it less convenient to pack away, but the format has its own advantages. Walking umbrellas can offer generous coverage, a substantial handle and the classic umbrella shape many people prefer, and when walking, can provide additional support, much like a walking cane.

They’re particularly well suited to:

  • regular walks
  • keeping at home or in the office
  • occasions when you know it’s going to rain
  • people who prefer a traditional crook handle, to hang on a coat stand or for walking support
  • larger canopies – safely protect two people walking arm-in-arm

A typical full-length walking umbrella might be around 85–95cm long when closed, although sizes vary.

Quick tip

If you usually carry an umbrella just in case, choose a folding umbrella. If you’re heading out knowing it’s going to rain, a walking or golf umbrella will usually give you better coverage.

Golf Umbrellas hijacked from the Golf course into everyday life

Golf umbrellas are large, full-length umbrellas designed to provide greater coverage from the rain. Originally associated with golf courses and exposed conditions, their larger canopies also make them popular for sporting events, outdoor work, dog walking, and situations where maximum coverage is more important than portability.

Like walking umbrellas, they generally don’t fold down, but golf umbrellas are typically larger, heavier and more performance-oriented, with substantial straight handles and robust frames.

What’s the difference between Golf umbrellas and walking umbrellas?

Golf and walking umbrellas share one important characteristic: both are generally full-length rather than folding umbrellas. The key difference is that golf umbrellas are typically larger and designed to maximise coverage, while walking umbrellas prioritise comfortable everyday use.

Why not have both?

For many people, that’s the most practical answer.

Keep a walking umbrella at home for wet days and longer walks, and a folding umbrella in your work or everyday bag for unexpected showers. It’s less about deciding which type of umbrella is objectively better and more about choosing the right one for the occasion.
